Portraits on Paper


One of the most popular commissions is the equine portrait on paper. Collectors may have seen Joy's work hanging in the Turf Club at Santa Anita Racetrack, where for years she did a series of the previous season's big stakes winners.

These portraits are done on 300-pound Winsor&Newton archival paper – not on canvas – and are suitable for framing under glass. Each board is primed with 4-5 coats of gesso and painted with extremely thin The final image size is 11x14 (and a framed piece will be approximately 20x24).

Unike a canvas oil painting, which would take several months to create, this type of portrait can be produced in four to six weeks after photographs are received. The artist will conduct a photo shoot at no charge if the subject horse is within Los Angeles County. (Transportation fees will incur for any photo shoot conducted outside of Los Angeles County).

Prices are $800 with tack, $950 without tack, unframed.*

Please note: For Christmas or Holiday deliveries, the cutoff date for new portrait commissions is November 1. *Delivery is for unframed artwork. However, matting and/or custom framing can be ordered to perfect the presentation. Archival matting with a liner will be $100. Custom framing prices will vary according to the tastes of the client .
